Beyond What We Imagine: The Power of Understanding God’s Love

 

Ephesians 3:20 (NIV) says, "Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us."

This verse is often quoted to encourage faith in God’s ability to bless and provide beyond our wildest dreams. But when we look at it in the context of Ephesians 3, we see that Paul is praying for believers to grasp the depth of Christ’s love. When we truly understand how vast, unshakable, and limitless His love is, something incredible happens—His power begins to work through us in ways we never expected.

Understanding the Depth of His Love

Just a few verses before, Paul prays:

"That you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." (Ephesians 3:17-19)

Paul connects knowing God’s love with experiencing His power. Many of us long for God to work in our lives, to do “immeasurably more” than we can imagine, but we struggle with truly believing He loves us unconditionally. When we doubt His love, we limit our ability to receive from Him.

But when we are rooted in His love, we step into a new level of trust. We stop striving to earn His blessings and instead walk in the confidence that He is for us, not against us. That’s when His power flows through us—when we rest in the truth that we are fully loved.

His Power at Work in Us

The phrase “according to his power that is at work within us” reminds us that God’s miraculous work is not just something He does for us—it’s something He does through us. His Spirit empowers us to:

  • Love people who seem unlovable

  • Step out in boldness to serve and lead

  • Forgive when it feels impossible

  • Speak truth with wisdom and grace

  • Pray with faith that moves mountains

When we let go of fear and insecurity and instead stand firm in His love, we become vessels for His power. He moves through us to accomplish things that go far beyond our natural abilities.

Dream Bigger, Trust Deeper

Ephesians 3:20 challenges us to expand our faith. God is not limited by our human imagination—He can do far more than we can conceive. But the key to unlocking this reality is not just in asking for big things—it’s in abiding in His love.
